Dr Tanya Jurado MA (Hons), PhD, FHEA

Senior Lecturer

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Management

Tanya has a longstanding interest in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). She has worked on projects for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the (former) Ministry for Economic Development and the Inland Revenue, and she has also published on SME policy development and on how SME owner managers go about exporting and engaging with the international trade environment. Current research interests emerge from an underlying preoccupation with supporting small businesses and entrepreneurship to become more inclusive both socially and economically. Tanya is working on projects on SMEs and HR; the gender imbalance in IT; and, Indigenous entrepreneurship. Tanya is actively involved in the wider SME international research community serving as Editor in Chief of Small Enterprise Research, former Vice-President Academic & Industry for the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand and co-Chair of the Entrepreneurship and SMEs stream for the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management. She has also been a Visiting Fellow at the Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Research Group at Portsmouth University.

She regularly reviews for journals in the entrepreneurship field including the International Small Business Journal, Small Enterprise Research, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Journal of Asian Business and Economic Studies, and for international conferences such as RENT, ICSB, ACERE and ANZAM.

Tanya holds a PhD and a PGDipBusAdmin in Management from Massey, and a BA and MA (Hons) in History from Auckland University. She currently teaches Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Business and Society.

Tanya's research is on the role of SMEs amidst the global challenges faced by economies worldwide. Current themes include SME internationalisation and trade policy and public policy support for SMEs, including Indigenous entrepreneurs. Tanya is part of a $15m study funded by the MBIE Endeavour Fund on Indigenising trade and also researches the participation and retention of women in information technology professions.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching Statement

I have extensive experience teaching undergraduate distance and face-to-face courses in entrepreneurship, small business management, business model innovation, international business, new venture development, corporate strategy and organisational behaviour. I currently teach at undergraduate level into the international business programme, as well as small business management, and also deliver the EMBA strategy course. I value reflection and encouraging students to question sources of information and develop critical thinking skills. Group work and collaboration are also important features of my teaching.

Graduate Supervision Statement

I value the opportunity to supervise students and I view this unique relationship as a partnership where I guide the student through the research journey. I have two overarching interests: one is in the social contribution of small and medium enterprises, and the other is to do with the gender disparity in the information technology sector. I am open to supervise a range of topics within those two overarching interests. As well as my research experience, I bring to the supervision a focus on qualitative methods, that draws on historical and contextual approaches.
