Jane is Professor of Employment Relations (ER) and HRM in the School of Management. Her research focuses on comparative ER, equality and diversity at work, employee consultation, HRM, labour market analysis and union strategy. Jane was Senior Research Fellow at the Industrial Relations Research Unit at the University of Warwick's Business School before joining AUT as Senior Lecturer in 2008. She has 230+ publications including journal articles, books, book chapters, commissioned reports & conference proceedings. She received the highest grade in the 2018 and 2012 TEC PBRF research rounds.

Before leaving Warwick, Jane served as the UK National Coordinator and Contributing Editor to the European Working Conditions Observatory, and as a contributor to the European Industrial Relations Observatory.

Jane has had successful grant applications as a sole, co- or named researcher from the UK Dept of Trade and Industry/Acas/Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development; ILO; RSNZ Marsden Fund, European Foundation; University of Warwick, UK Economic & Social Research Council; AUT; and Massey University's Vice-Chancellor's, Research, Strategic Innovation and MBS PVC Office funds. She's been involved in various projects (e.g. as Primary Investigator on an ESRC Post-Doctoral Fellowship; sole UK partner of a 5-country  team involved in analysis of the European Working Conditions Survey 2005; lead researcher for an ILO cross-national project on gender equality and social dialogue; and for ILO studies of employment and child labour policies in the Pacific). Her empirical/policy-orientated background is anchored in quantitative & qualitative research. Jane co-directs Massey's People, Organisation, Work and Employment Research (MPOWER) group, for which she and Prof. Jim Arrowsmith were awarded a Massey Business School Certificate of Excellence in Enterprise in 2014. She spoke at plenary sessions of the 2016 British Universities' Industrial Relations Association conference and 2009 World Congress of the International Industrial Relations Association. She co-received the Vic Taylor Memorial Paper Award at the 2010 Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia and NZ Conference, and was sole recipient of the 2016-17 Massey Business School College Award Distinction - Individual for Research. Jane edited The Big Issues in Employment: HRM and Employment Relations in Australasia (2018) and chaired the 2019 HRD National HR Summit (as in 2017). In 2018, she was part of an international panel who reviewed the University of the South Pacific's School of Management and Public Administration (SMPA).

Jane was a panellist in the 2018 & 2012 PBRF rounds, 2017 HRINZ HR Researcher of the Year, & part of the 2019 HRINZ HR Research Team of the Year.
